Digital Consent

According to nationalonlinesafety.com, digital consent is about asking, seeking, and receiving permission online. At a basic level, examples of digital consent include asking for permission before sharing someone else’s images, videos, posts, and text messages online.

In light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to understand the idea of digital consent. Even though we may not be interacting face-to-face, one’s actions can still have a profound impact. It is important to acquire consent before screenshotting a message, tagging someone in a post, or pestering someone over text. It is important to set boundaries and set a balance regarding digital interactions. Simply asking if your friend is able to FaceTime before calling is a good example. Everyone is different, and it is important that we learn to adapt to and respect one another.
